Start with context, not assumptions
An alert is a lead—not a verdict. Before taking action, confirm what triggered it, which asset is involved, and whether the activity is expected. A small amount of context can save an hour of chasing noise.
A repeatable first pass
- Validate the signal. Review the detection logic, timestamp, and source data.
- Identify the asset and owner. Check its role, criticality, and recent changes.
- Build a short timeline. Compare the event with authentication, endpoint, and network logs.
- Preserve evidence. Record query results and relevant identifiers before changing anything.
- Choose the next step. Close with a clear reason, investigate further, or escalate with what you know.
Keep your notes useful
Write down what you observed, what you checked, and why you made the decision. Good notes make handoffs faster and help the whole team improve detections over time.
When in doubt, follow your organization’s incident response plan and escalation path.
